- History: The Turks and Caicos Islands, formerly part of the Bahamian Islands Chain is a member of the British Commonwealth, with the Islands fostering a growing Off-Shore Financial Center akin to The Cayman Islands, another British Crown Colony.
The British Governor as well as The Local Government are seated on the Capital Island, Grand Turk, with the other main named islands being The Caicos (string of Islands) Islands comprised of South Caicos, East Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, Providenciales and West Caicos, hence the name Turks and Caicos Islands. Salt Cay, southeast of Grand Turk, comprises the remainder of the named islands.
In the late 1960's Seven Millionaires discovered The Turks and Caicos Islands, purchased land from The Crown and built a tiny airstrip and marina for their friend's planes and yachts, eventually evolving into The Third Turtle Inn, which is thriving in the islands today.
With the islands "discovered", they remained a secluded playground for the wealthy elite, enhanced, naturally by the British Territory's Banking Laws.
In 1984 however, lured by the International Airports located on Grand Turk, Providenciales and South Caicos, together with the pristine, sparkling beaches and tranquillity of The Islands, Club Mediterranean developed a large Club Med Resort Development in The Turks and Caicos Islands spurring the beginnings of tourism to the area.
In 1999, Club Med commenced construction of an additional 250 rooms to their Turks and Caicos inventory.
Ancillary to Club Med, builders flocked to the Islands constructing Hotel Condominiums and Marinas.
In 1999, the Allegro Group purchased the 250 room Ramada Turquoise Reef Luxury Hotel and are in the process of adding an additional 250 rooms. In 1996 The Sandals Group purchased the former Sheraton Hotel Development and are expanding this prestigious property.
The Allegro Group and Sandals hold Casino Licenses. In addition Comfort Suites has recently opened in Providenciales with approximately 150 Suites.
Hotel Condominiums such as The Ocean Club, Allegro Beach Club, Grace Bay Club, The Mansions, Crystal Bay Resort, The Sands, Grace Point, The Hemispheres, and Prestancia Resort Condominiums are thriving within the business and tourism climate offering Condominium Accommodations as well as Condominium Rental Services for Owners which charge a minimum of Forty (40%) Percent of the gross rental amount.
Several other Resort Condominiums are currently under construction. Ancillary to thriving tourism is the need for the developing islands to commit to items such as infra-structure, updated health care facilities, international airports, fine dining and entertainment, conch and fish farming, distribution networks, technical training programs for the Turk Islanders, etc.
The Crown and the Turks and Caicos Government are committed to developing the islands as a Tourist Destination Point and Off-Shore Financial Center, having spent Millions of Dollars within the past few years in these areas, particularly Infra-structure development.
Some Thirty-Five (35) Years ago Bermuda was the first of The British West Indies to develop into an Off-Shore Financial Center focusing primarily on the insurance aspects of Off-Shore Finance and naturally, tourism.
Twenty (20) Years ago The Cayman Islands were the playground of the wealthy with little tourism and Off-Shore Financing; today, The Cayman Islands are the jewel of the Caribbean, with a thriving Tourism Industry and Off-Shore Financial Center coupled with the exorbitant property prices these two facets of industry bring with them.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are the last untamed islands of the Crown Colonies in this part of the world, offering you an undiscovered hideaway at undiscovered prices. Club Med and Ramada started the trend. As you are aware, high tourism rates and high prices the tourists bring with them spell one thing for you:
SUCCESS!
It can truly be said that The Turks and Caicos Islands will be the Cayman Islands of the 21st Century. |
